ADA Compliance & Accessibility Audits

ADA website compliance means your site can be used by people with disabilities — including those navigating by keyboard, screen reader, magnification or voice control. In practice, compliance is measured against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the standard US courts and the Department of Justice reference. Cibbster Designs performs manual accessibility audits, remediates the failures, and documents the result in an accessibility statement. Automated scanners catch only a minority of real issues, so every audit we run includes hands-on keyboard and screen-reader testing.

The problem this solves

Web accessibility lawsuits against small businesses run into the thousands each year, and most target the same handful of failures: images without alt text, forms without labels, low-contrast text, and menus that cannot be operated without a mouse. An overlay widget does not fix any of them.

Scope

What's included

Everything below is part of the engagement. Where something is genuinely optional, we say so in the quote rather than discovering it later.

  • Automated scan baseline

axe-core and Lighthouse across every template to catch the mechanical failures quickly.

  • Manual keyboard testing

Every interactive element operated with keyboard alone, checking focus order, focus visibility, keyboard traps and skip links.

  • Screen-reader testing

Real testing with NVDA and VoiceOver, because a page can pass every automated check and still be unusable.

  • Colour contrast analysis

Every text and interface colour pair measured against the 4.5:1 and 3:1 thresholds, including hover and focus states.

  • Forms & error handling

Label association, required-field indication, accessible error messages and live-region announcements.

  • Prioritised remediation report

Each finding mapped to the specific WCAG success criterion, rated by severity and legal exposure, with the actual code fix.

  • Remediation work

We fix the failures rather than handing you a report and wishing you luck.

  • Accessibility statement

A published statement documenting your conformance level, known limitations and how users can report barriers — which is itself evidence of good-faith effort.

How It Works

The process

  1. Scope

Identify every unique template and user journey — audits are per template, not per page.

  2. Automated pass

Scan to clear the mechanical issues and establish a baseline.

  3. Manual pass

Keyboard and screen-reader testing on each template and journey.

  4. Report

Prioritised findings mapped to WCAG 2.2 AA with code-level recommendations.

  5. Remediate & retest

Fix, then verify each finding is genuinely resolved.

Questions

ADA Compliance & Accessibility Audits FAQs

Does the ADA actually apply to websites?

US courts have overwhelmingly held that the ADA applies to the websites of businesses open to the public, and in 2024 the Department of Justice issued a rule explicitly adopting WCAG 2.1 AA for state and local government websites. For private businesses there is still no single codified technical standard, which is precisely why plaintiffs and courts use WCAG as the benchmark. Conforming to WCAG 2.2 AA is the practical definition of compliance.

Do accessibility overlay widgets make my site compliant?

No. Overlay tools — the floating accessibility icon that claims one-line compliance — have been named in hundreds of lawsuits against sites that had them installed, and hundreds of accessibility professionals have signed a public statement against them. They cannot fix underlying markup problems, and they sometimes break assistive technology that was working. Real compliance requires fixing the code.

How much does an ADA audit cost?

Audits start at $2,500 for a small brochure site of up to roughly ten unique templates. Remediation is quoted separately once we know what we found, because a well-built site may need six hours of work and a badly built one may need sixty.

What is WCAG 2.2 AA?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are the international standard for web accessibility, published by the W3C. Version 2.2 is current, and Level AA is the conformance level regulations and courts reference. It covers roughly fifty testable success criteria across four principles: content must be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.

We just got a demand letter. Can you help?

Yes, and quickly. The first step is an audit establishing exactly what fails, which tells your attorney what is actually at stake. Documented remediation work in progress materially strengthens your position. We can usually start an audit within a week.

Does accessibility help SEO?

Yes, meaningfully. Alt text, semantic headings, descriptive link text, clean landmark structure and captions are simultaneously accessibility requirements and things search engines and AI models use to understand a page. Accessible sites are easier for machines to read, which is the entire job of SEO.

Works Well With

Web Design & Development

Cibbster Designs builds custom websites for small businesses, contractors and service companies in Lapeer County, Michigan and nationwide. Every site is hand-coded rather than assembled from a page builder, which keeps pages light, fast and fully under your control. A typical build covers strategy, design, development, accessibility, on-page SEO and launch, and takes four to eight weeks depending on page count. Builds start at $4,500 for a five-to-eight page business site, or $1,800 for a single-page or landing site, and rise with scope from there.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is the work of making your business the answer Google returns when a nearby customer searches for what you sell. For local service businesses that means three things: a properly optimised Google Business Profile, a technically clean website with correct structured data, and genuinely useful pages targeting the terms your customers actually type. Cibbster Designs handles all three, and increasingly optimises for AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews as well.

Hosting & Maintenance

Managed hosting means somebody other than you is responsible for keeping the website online, patched, backed up and fast. Cibbster Designs hosts client sites on hardened cloud infrastructure with daily off-site backups, uptime monitoring, automatic SSL renewal and monthly security patching. Plans start at $149 per month, and unlike commodity shared hosting, when something breaks you reach the person who built your site.
